Grid Integration of Renewables in Egypt
Integration of large Amounts of Renewable Electricity in the Egyptian Energy Grid - Capacity Building for Management and Engineer Technical Level

With funds from the Federal German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, GTZ and InWent have commissioned the Renewables Academy (RENAC) to undertake a capacity building activity on the integration of renewable electricity into the Egyptian electricity supply system.  For this purpose a number of Egyptian power grid planners, operators and managers will be trained.  The project aims to support the efficient integration of renewable energy into the infrastructure of the Egyptian electricity grid for the future.   To achieve the maximum effectiveness the training shall provide a mixture of theory and practice exercises.  The project will cover a range of issues designed to empower the participants to meet the challenges facing the Egyptian grid. In particular, the grid will have to be able to cope with high volumes of renewable energy in the form of wind energy, grid connected photovoltaic, concentrating solar power (CSP), decentralised cogeneration of biomass, sewage gas and landfill gas.

Wind power Africa 2010 conference and renewable energy Exhibition

WWEC2009 Conference Resolution

The World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), in association with the Korea Wind Energy Association (KWEA), acknowledges and welcomes the presence of those 600 participants attending this Conference from wind and associated renewable energy technologies. The interests include all aspects of sustainable wind technology development, design, manufacturing, operation and implementation, with a special focus on offshore wind power and integrated renewable energy solutions such as hybrid systems.

The Conference recognizes the support of the governments, especially of the province of Jeju Island, Korea, Germany, the province of Ontario as well as UNESCO and all organizations supporting the Conference, and applauds their continued support and vision for the accelerated deployment of renewable energy, in particular wind energy, to provide clean energy, to tackle climate change, increase energy security and create new jobs.
 
The Conference thanks all those who have contributed to its success, especially the Organizing Committee, the speakers, the exhibitors and sponsors as well as all the involved volunteers.
The Conference calls on governments and the private sector to recognize renewable energy as an effective and speedy instrument to overcome the current global financial crisis. Such approach has been supported by several reports published by international organizations.

The Conference welcomes the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency and strongly supports the early establishment of an operational organization to which WWEA and the International Renewable Energy Alliance have offered their full assistance.

The Conference welcomes the adoption of the Green Energy and Economy Act in Ontario, introducing the first feed-in law in North America less than one year after it was proposed during the WWEC2008 in Kingston. The Conference encourages the Korean Government to implement similar ambitious legislation.

The Conference welcomes that the World Bioenergy Association has joined the International Renewable Energy Alliance so that all the major world technology associations are working closely together.

In addition, and in the pursuit of renewable energy resources, the Conference resolves to pursue the following objectives, policies and actions:

1. Remove all subsidies and enforce the internalization of all externalities to achieve a level playing field;

2. Until this is achieved, pursue compensatory regulatory frameworks such as sufficient and effective feed-in tariffs that encourage renewable energy developments, and that provide sufficient financial security to promote long-term investment, especially for smaller investors;

3.  Raise the political and social awareness to foster the political will towards the inevitable use of renewable energy, especially by engaging and enabling all levels of society, particularly individual citizens, community power proponents and the youth;

4. Create new human, industrial, administrative and financial capacities and strengthen appropriate supportive and dedicated structures and institutions for renewable energy;

5. Increase energy supply security and system stability through a balanced supply mix of renewable energy and geographically distributed generation and increase interaction of local, national, regional and global networks and alliances that contribute to greater cooperation between renewable energy technologies such as International Renewable Energy Alliance;

6. Reduce overall costs for energy supply and decrease volatility through the increased deployment of renewable energy power;

7. Develop, use and expand appropriate national, regional and international financing mechanisms for the exclusive realization of renewable energy, especially making use of funds provided as part of the international economic recovery programs;

8.  In order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, enhance developing countries to get easier access to technology transfer in order to realize the full benefits of renewable technologies such as sustainable jobs through local manufacturing, direct economic benefits through community based ownership and accessible energy for increased wealth and productivity;

9.  In order to achieve in Copenhagen in December an effective international agreement on climate change mitigation, take into account the key role of renewable energies and to create the long-term frameworks for their full deployment;

10. Note that the next International Governmental Renewable Energy Conference will take place in India in 2010, hosted by the Indian Government, and encourage governments and the private sector to proactively contribute to its preparatory process;

11. Note that the next World Wind Energy Conference will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, and encourage all members of the Association, others involved in wind power and other renewable energy development, operation and financing as well as the exhibitors to further the cause of wind power development and the expansion of the role of Renewable Energy by participating in the Turkish Conference.

Hybrid Intermittent Renewable Energy Supplies Presentation – Feb. 12th, 2009

WWEA Vice-President and EGWEA President, Prof Galal Osman, will be presenting a talk titled “Hybrid Intermittent Renewable Energy Supplies / Natural Gas  back up” at the Marriott Hotel, Zamalek, Cairo on Thursday Feb. 12th, 2009, at 9:45 am.

The presentation will be during the round table on Energy Tariffs and Investment organized by EAMGCC (The Euro-Arab Mashreq Gas Co-operation Centre).  EAMGCC aims to promote the development of gas markets in the Mashreq region and links to gas markets in the European Union.  It was established in February 2006 with funding from the European Union and from the Governments of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.  A key part of EAMGCC activities involves promoting public debate on issues relating to gas market development.

AfriREA attends “Solar Roof Project Cairo” Inauguration

 

AfriREA President Prof. Galal Osman and board member, Dr. Mohamed Osama have both attended the official inauguration of the “Solar Roof Project Cairo” at the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule (DEO, German School Dokki) on 28th of May 2008.   The opening ceremony was led by H.E. Bernd Erbel, Ambassador of Germany to Egypt

The “Solar Roof Project Cairo” is part of the program “Solar Roofs on German Schools and Institutions abroad” which is organized by the Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) - the German Energy Agency.  It is a public-private partnership co-financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). The “Solar Roof Project Cairo” aims at reinforcing the cooperation between Egyptian and German companies in the field of solar technology.

 

 

 

The solar systems installed on the roof of the school by the German companies KACO Gerätetechnik GmbH and SUNSET Energietechnik GmbH represent a wide range of solar applications: the photovoltaic system generates electricity and the solar thermal system provides hot water to the school. Furthermore a solar pumping system extracts the ground water necessary for the irrigation of the sports field.

The International Conference on Renewable Energy in Africa was held at Le Meridien President Hotel in Dakar, Senegal, from 16-18 April 2008. The Conference focused on the theme “making renewable energy markets work for Africa: policies, industries and finance for scaling up,” and was jointly organized by the Government of Senegal, the African Union (AU), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). It brought together 500 participants, including: high-level representatives and experts in energy and industry from African countries; representatives from the African Union Commission (AUC) and African Regional Economic Communities; and representatives from UN agencies, bilateral organizations, the private sector, as well as regional and international non-governmental organizations.
The Conference aimed to provide visible leadership and commitment to a common strategy for market-based scaling up of renewable energies in Africa. The major objectives were to: assess the potential of renewable energy in addressing Africa’s energy challenges; identify policy and regulatory options and new policy actions to stimulate broader and accelerated market-based dissemination of renewable energy; and identify capacity needs for renewable energy market enablers and players.
The three-day meeting consisted of plenary and parallel sessions as well as a Ministerial Segment. Recommendations from these sessions were consolidated into a Plan of Action on Scaling Up Renewables in Africa, which was endorsed in the Dakar Declaration on Scaling Up Renewables in Africa. The Declaration was adopted during the Ministerial Segment and notes that Conference participants, inter alia:

  • agree to an African continental target for governments, with support from development partners, to scale up annual renewable energy investments to US$10 billion between 2009-2014;
  • adopt a Plan of Action consisting of five key programme dimensions;
  • call upon African governments, their international development partners, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to support implementation of the Plan of Action with adequate resources; and
  • recommend that the AU, UNIDO and other relevant development partners establish a ministerial-level policy advocacy group, to be supported by a coordination unit.

In the parallel session on Policy and regulatory issues for grid-connected renewable energy, AfriREA President Galal Osman, stressed the importance of capacity building to enable local manufacturing of renewable energy technologies in Africa. He highlighted that renewable energies are essential for meeting future electricity demands in Africa. He stressed the need for reforms in the electricity sector, including feed-in tariffs, unbundling of ownership of transmission systems, and improved third party access to the electricity grid.


AfriREA participation in ICREA, 16-18 April 2008


AfriREA president, professor Galal Osman is attending the International Conference on Renewable Energy in Africa (ICREA) held in Dakar, Senegal, 16-18 2008.  Within the conference technical program, Prof. Osman first presentation on April 16th is titled “Policy and regulatory issues for grid connected wind energy in Egypt, implications for scaling up” on April 16th and his second presentation on April 17th is titled “Large Wind Farms – Project in Egypt”.
ICREA is a joint activity of the Government of Senegal, the African Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).  The conference focuses on renewable energy markets for Africa in terms of policies, industries and finance for scaling-up.  ICREA website is http://www.unido.org/index.php?id=o76539


Submission of Egypt's Pledge to WIREC 2008

Both Prof. Galal Osman (EGWEA & AFRIREA President) and  Mr Mohamed Abo El Eneen (Chairman of Energy and Industry Committee - Egyptian Parliament) represented Egypt in the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference, WIREC 2008.   As requested during the conference, Prof. Galal Osman has submitted Egypt's renewable energy pledge to WIREC 2008, titled: Egypt: 20% Renewables by 2020.  The pledge states an aim of 20% of Egypt's generated electricity to be from renewable energy sources (10GW) by the year 2020. 14% would be from Wind power (7GW) and 6% from Hydro power (3GW).  WIREC 2008 Pledges news: http://www.ren21.net/news/news24.asp


AfriREA participation in MEPCON 2008, March 12-15 2008

AfriREA president, professor Galal Osman and AfriREA board member, Dr. Mohamed Osama are both attending the 12th International Middle-East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON 2008) which takes place in Aswan, Egypt, March 12 -15, 2008.

The objective of the conference is to cover present technological progress in key areas of power engineering.  It will provide a forum for university faculties, research institutes, industry and utility engineers to exchange views and discuss challenges for the future. Activities include panel discussion workshops and invited speakers will be held.  One of the conference main topics of interest is Renewable Energy Technology, especially Wind Energy. MEPCON 2008 website is http://www.svu.edu.eg/mepcon08

 AfriREA president, professor Galal Osman is attending the Washington International Energy conference (WIREC2008) held in Washington DC, USA, March 3-6 2008

Hosted by the United States Government, in cooperation with the American Council On Renewable Energy, WIREC 2008 is the third global ministerial-level conference on renewable energy, following events in Beijing in 2005 and Bonn in 2004.  WIREC 2008 focuses on three pillars necessary to support renewable energy industries: Agriculture and Rural Development; Technology/Research and Development; and Market Adoption and Finance.  Each track will examine how public policies and private efforts can most effectively advance renewable energy across the globe.  WIREC 2008 website is http://www.wirec2008.gov

 

WWEI training course in Egypt

In November 2007, WWEI  finished the first part of a training course in Cairo, Egypt .

After the successful completion of the 3-weeks WWEI Renewable expert training program for AOI in Egypt Preben Maegaard, director of WWEI Denmark, went to Egypt to hand over the training certificates to the AOI students.

The training program was conducted by WWEI in Denmark, which is the international training branch of the Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy in cooperation with WWEI in Egypt, represented by professor, Dr. engineer Galal Osman.
